This is a general checklist that you can adapt. For a very simple video (e.g. a spontaneous TikTok), you might only use the “Concept” and “Audio/Camera” points. For a larger production, you’ll add more details. The important thing is to use it as a guide.
It depends on the complexity of the video. For a short and simple video, maybe 1-2 hours of planning. For a corporate video or event, it can be days or weeks. The return on investment in time is huge: 1 hour of pre-production can save you 5 hours of problems in filming and editing.
Be flexible and look for alternative solutions. If a permit is impossible, change location. If a prop isn’t available, think of a substitute. Pre-production allows you to identify these problems in time to find solutions before the shooting day.
